Kansas City, 6:00 A.M.

Sunday morning, early June
Late in coming, leaving soon
Seven weeks, been on the road
Still a long way left to go
Mine ain’t the usual story
Hard luck and cheap wine
Can’t quite piece together
What brought me to this place and time
Kansas City, 6 A.M.

Left a day job, a wife and kid
No explaining the things I did
Yes, they told me you can’t run away
But I sure am far from yesterday
Trucks rolling through
The gray diesel air
Drivers giving me the hollow stare
Kansas City, 6 A.M.

No use thinkin’ bout what’s left behind
They don’t mean a thing to me
They’re as gone as they can be

Burning pavement, a empty sky
Fruit of knowledge, another lie
They say the truth will make you free
Look at what it’s done to me
Mine ain’t the usual story
Lost loves, petty crimes
Can’t quite piece together
What brought me to this place and time
Kansas City, 6 A.M.
