Was headin’ out of Philadelphia
Gonna take a trip out to West L.A.
Shorted out on the last month’s rent,
Packed the truck and then I closed up
the apartment
‘Cause I got a little note from a long
lost friend
Said she wants to take me back again
Got a question stuck in my head
As I passed on by the gate down in St.
Louis
Just what am I doin’ here?
Am I any wiser now?
Well, I guess that’s what I get
From punching clocks and cashing pay
checks
But am I any smarter than the day
When I first laid eyes on that old
friend?
Gas station man, put 5 down on 7
Ran out of money when I got to Haynes
Tried to give her a call, but I just got
her machine
Took a couple of jobs for some pay
But the cash burned faster than them
great old plains
Caught up in a brushfire
Am I any wiser now?
Well, I guess that’s what I get
From punching clocks and cashing pay
checks
But am I any smarter than the day
When I first laid eyes on that old
friend?
Gas station man, put 5 down on 7
Things got a little slow for me here
Since the truck blew out both first and
second gears
At least this’ll give me one last chance
To get my shit back together and find a
new romance
Kinda hard takin’ tips as a pauper
Buried down deep here in Moapa
But you’re the first decent one I met in
this town that I can’t get out of
Gas station man
Gas station man
Gas station man
Won’t you buy me a round?
5 on 7…….
