DeSoto Rust Gig Archives

Friday, January 11, 2013 Studio 98
What seemed to be a Far Northeast metal club turned out to be a welcoming home for the likes of us.  What Am I Doin' Hangin' Round? was particularly well-received.  We might have had the first pedal steel there ever.

Thanks so much to the great folks at Studio 98, and especially to our friends in Hammer Down for hooking us up.  Great playing with you guys again!

Friday, December 28, 2012 Legendary Dobbs
A great post-Christmas crowd on South Street and at the club.  Thanks to all the friends who made it out, especially Highway Gothic-era bass player and band friend Steve Savage.  Great to catch up on families and guitars!

Thanks so much to Jim Thorpe for the booking, as well as sound guy Pat Davis.  Fantastic job!

Saturday, December 8, 2012 John & Peter's Place
Once again, it had been much too long.  Barry's first time at J&Ps went the way it always does there - a fabulous time was had by all!  Thanks to new fans Ron and Tracey, Penny and Kathleen from La Salle, and of course to the wonderful Lauren for being the perfect hostess!
Friday, April 13 and Saturday, April 14, 2012 Landslide Saloon
It was particularly nice to be back at the Landslide and shake off the cobwebs that formed while drummer Dave has been on a long-term work assignment up in Frackville, North PA.  The place was full of familiar places both nights.  They appreciated our new covers of the Waylon Jennings classics Only Daddy That'll Walk the Line and Are You Sure Hank Done it this Way.

Barry Yasika, now having played with us several times is simply amazing on pedal steel.  Thanks again Barry. Thanks again to Diane and the other great folks at the Landslide.

Friday, February 17 and Saturday, February 18, 2012 Landslide Saloon
We love this place.  It's always great to return to a club and see familiar faces, knowing that they're there to hear us.  And dance.

Thanks again to quasi-member Barry Yasika for lending his massive talents on pedal steel.  Thanks as usual to Diane and the other great folks at the Landslide on beautiful Jugtown Mountain.  See you in April!

Friday, November 11 and Saturday, November 12, 2011 Landslide Saloon
.....And a Happy Nigel Tufnel day to everyone!

Another fun weekend at the Landslide. We were thrilled to have Barry Yasika sit in both nights on pedal steel.  Barry hails from Bethlehem, just across the river from the Landslide and is normally Gritzz's steel man (that's how Dave R. met him.)  He dug the originals and signed on for the weekend.  Without a single practice with us, he settled in like the talented pro he is.  The good crowd at the Landslide certainly approved.  Thanks Barry, and we're definitely looking forward to doing it again!

A big thanks to Diane and all the great staff at the Landslide.  The huge bison statue gracing the outside of the Landslide has been stored for the Jugtown Mountain winter, but the crowd at the Landslide was as warm and appreciative as they were in the summer.  We're looking forward to our return in in the next month or so.

Saturday, October 1, 2011 Barrington Coffee House
The Barrington Coffee House is somewhat unique among its type of music venue -Scott "Trif" Trifeletti is a huge fan of good music and runs the place accordingly.  National acts and locals alike dig the intimacy, but also the top-notch sound and Trif's attention to detail.  So we're very flattered that he's a fan and brought us back.  Dawn Hiatt and her standup bass-playing partner opened with a fantastic set of originals.  Great tunes and a beautiful voice, Dawn!  It was nice getting to meet David P.'s parents, as well as his old friend Tommy Shay who drove down from extreme North Jersey to check us out.  And as usual, we had a great time.

Thanks again to Trif, Dawn and all the folks who rushed over after the Phils beat the Cards (especially Dave Reeve!)

Friday, August 19 and Saturday, August 20, 2011 Landslide Saloon
The Landslide is located in the wilds of New Jersey around 30 miles north of Trenton halfway up Jugtown Mountain.  Beautiful country east of the Water Gap.  The Landslide is also the real thing - a classic honky-tonk with great food and dancing.  Seeing all the folks on the dance floor, seniors and young folks, you couldn't help but think of Texas.

We played three sets each night, mixing in originals with the modern and classic county covers, and we had a blast.  Always fun to play where people aren't shy about showing enthusiasm and are obviously digging what we're doing.

A big thanks to Diane for booking us based on nothing more than having booked Dave's former band.  Fortunately for all of us, she had no regrets!  Thanks to the other nice staff as well.  A special shout-out to Friday night's older regulars who practically closed the place down.  A big thanks also to Bryant, Gritzz's lead singer, who went way out of his way to drop in and buy the shots of Beam.

We're looking forward to our return in November!

Saturday, June 25, 2011 John & Peter's Place
Had it really been this long?  Always a gas to return to New Hope, particularly with our new expanded lineup.  Thanks as always to Lauren for hosting the afternoon (and doing sound!)  Thanks also to old buddy DJ Greg G. who definitely approved of the addition of Ed's pedal steel and keyboards.  Thanks also to all the folks who dropped in to give us a listen.  We'll be back!
Friday, May 20, 2011 Bull Durham's Texas BBQ
After working so hard on a huge amount of cover material for the last three months, it was fantastic to finally just PLAY.  If we'd hoped we could bring on the May 21st Redneck Rapture by playing Tobey Keith at the stroke of midnight, we were wrong.

Welcome again to Ed and David, our new members.  Great job guys; you had even more material to learn than Ray, Dave and David.  Thanks so much to all the friends who dropped in, and to the new fans (Jeff, etc.) who really dug what we were doing. Thanks most of all to John "Bull" and Lisa Durham for having us.  By the way, you guys serve delicious grub.

As for our new sound, the covers are great, but the exciting part is what the addition of keys and pedal steel does to our originals.  Come to our next show and see what the fuss is about.

Friday, February 25, 2011 Legendary Dobbs
Back in the day (late 80's and 90's), J.C. Dobbs was one of the best music venues in town and an anchor of the South Street music scene.  After several years and other incarnations, the space is back as Legendary Dobbs.  Same stage (minus the brick column in the middle), same layout, same photos of bands with bad haircuts, but very nicely updated.  A great place for DSR to get back to gigging with our new bass player, David Parisi.  A hugely fun night.  The headliners, HER and Kings County, barely made it from Buffalo because of the winter storm that had come through earlier in the day.  They're a really fun band from Brooklyn with three guitars and a (pardon) smokin' hot front lady.  We approve!

Thanks so much to Jim Thorpe for the booking, as well as stage manager Larry Horn and sound guy Pat Davis.  Fantastic job!  Thanks also to lovely waitress Robin (we dig that Goth/CSI pigtail thing you've got going on.)  Most of all thanks to the friends and family (especially David Parisi's) who helped fill the club.  Great to be playing again!

Saturday, November 6, 2010 John & Peter's Place
It was great to send Steve Savage, our good friend and bass player since 2006, off with a fantastic afternoon at our favorite club.  The crowd was energetic and appreciative, and we were (pardon the boast) at the top of our game.  We debuted more of our "classic country" covers - The Whiskey Ain't Workin' Anymore and Whiskey River.  (Do you notice a theme here?)  These two join Folsom Prison and Mama Tried, which we also performed.  A toast to Darlene and Belinda and all the other new fans who bought CDs, pitchers of PBR and filled the tip buckets. Thanks again to the wonderful folks at J&P's, particularly Lauren.  We'll be back ASAP with a new bass player.
Saturday, October 16, 2010 Puck
It was with great pleasure that we returned to Puck. Outside on the giant projection TV, Doc Halladay and the Phillies were dropping game #1 of the NLCS to the Giants.  We'll get 'em tomorrow!

Inside, Max Sideman performed a very nice opening set.  Thanks so much to Ilene and Eric Marker for coming up from Philly and for the round of beers.  Thanks again to Courtney for booking our return, Nancy for being so gracious, and all the staff at Puck.  Special thanks to sound man Mike Lightkep, who as usual did a fabulous job working the board and reporting the score.

Saturday, August 21, 2010 John & Peter's Place
Our long overdue return to one of our all-time favorite venues - first time back since SXSW.  Special thanks to long-time fan, Tammy Rothwell, who with a friend made it up to New Hope before heading to Atlantic City to see KC and Sunshine Band!  What a musical juxtaposition!  Great seeing you again.  Also nice to make new fans - thanks to Mark and Connie for spending the entire afternoon with us.  Thanks also to Ray's cousin, Melissa and her husband Chris who got to check us out for the first time.  And we can't forget #1 fan Greg G.  Most of all, thanks to Lauren for booking us and hosting the afternoon.  You're the best!
Saturday, July 10, 2010 The Note
This premier venue in West Chester fully lived up to its reputation as a great place for live music.  Thanks to the folks at the Note, especially Jim, the sound man.  Special thanks to Rob Snyder, whose CD release party was the main event.  Rob and his band are very talented musicians with a huge following in Chester County. The threesome known as Liquid Courage also had their following, a particularly attractive one at that!  And so did we. Thanks to all the folks who braved the bike race traffic to come see us, especially all of Ray's and Dave & Liz's friends.  By the way, in our humble opinion, we burned it down and hope to be back soon.
Saturday, July 3, 2010 Puck
Just for the record - we're not divas.  In fact, we do know how to play nicely with just about any other musicians out there.  As long as the respect is mutual....Truth is, we've come too far to be treated as amateurs by the likes of Eric Sommer.  Someone who plays as many shows as he claims to should know how a multi-band bill works.  Struck us as a nice guy who is maybe just a little bit of a diva himself.

When we arrived at Puck, Mike, the very professional sound guy, was already apologizing.  Seems that Mr. Sommer, the touring act on the bill with us, had showed up in the afternoon, made the staff open the performance space, disassembled the house drum kit, moved his gear on stage, and took over the "green room" with his collection of 10 or so guitars that he uses on stage.  Yes, he's a solo performer who uses a wall of combo amps, and all these weird, cheap guitars.  We're normally pretty easy going, but around 10:30, it became clear that Eric was operating on his own clock and was taking his sweet time with his set, even though we were supposed to be taking the stage at that point.  Even worse, with all his gear, the broken down drum kit, etc., there would be at least a half hour set change time.  The stage would have to wired from scratch.  And, he was still playing at 11:00.  When he was in no hurry to get his stuff off the stage, Mike, trying to work around him, Dave trying to get the kit on stage, things escalated.  In short, we were soon a member shy of a line up.  (Better to walk out than put the dude in the hospital.)

We ourselves owe a huge apology to Mike, Nancy, the manager, as well as Courtney who booked us.  But Nancy was gracious as hell, totally understanding our frustration and vowing to have us back.  Can't thank her enough for being so cool about something so ugly.  Thanks again to Mike -sorry for putting you in the middle.  And a shout out to opener Rory Sullivan - great material and a super voice.

Saturday, June 26, 2010 YachtStock 2010
The YachtStock River Jam raises money to benefit a variety of children's charities.  Held at the West End Boat Club marina in Essington, the event features a variety of live music. This year, we performed on the river stage (next door to the bar.)  A big thanks to Pat on the board, as well as the rest of the sound crew.  Not only did they do a great job with the sound, but you could tell they dug us tremendously.  (Nothing against classic rock cover bands, but after the first three or four....)  Our cover of Mike Nesmith's What Am I Doing Hangin' Round (Train to San Antone) went over particularly well (no surprise there.)  Thanks to George Spicer, Steve Kurtz and everyone at YachtStock for letting us be a part of the event and being so receptive to our original stuff.
Saturday, May 29, 2010 Hucklebucks
Weather (blizzard) forced to cancel our appearance at Blind Pigeon Record's Hootenanny 2009, the release party for the label's annual compilation CD back in December. So it was fantastic to be able to participate in the 2010 Memorial Day Hoot.  Hucklebucks is always a fun show and this was no exception.  We debuted our cover of Mike Nesmiths's What Am I Doing Hanging 'Round and dedicated All Riders... All Nighters to the late Dennis Hopper.  The Flyers lost game #1 of the Stanley Cup tournament, but Roy Halladay tossed a perfect game for the Phillies.  A huge thanks to friend Bill Whalen of Gleasons Drift who put together the show and invited us to put San Angelo on this, the seventh compilation disk.  See us at a show for your FREE copy.  Thanks also to sound guy Nick.  Always fun hanging with Bill, as well as former Gleasons Drift bass player Greg Lowe, now playing guitar with his own band, the Jargonauts
Thursday, April 1, 2010 Puck
This was our first performance at the Doylestown live music institution.  It felt great to take the stage again after 10 days or so off, particularly in a setting with such great sound.  Thanks to Jim Thorpe for inviting us to play.  Special thanks to Brian Cronin of Origivation magazine for interviewing us after our set and allowing us to share our tales of New Orleans and Austin.  The interview and a couple of tunes from the show is available at the O List.

The Southern Bound Tour 2010

Saturday, March 20, 2010 Opal Divine's Penn Field (Austin, TX)

An 11:00 am set was tough after last night's gig (and after-party), but this one was worth it.  The cold front that woke us all up at 6:00 meant it was too wet for the patio stage, so the show moved inside.  Jason, the sound guy, pulled it together fast and we did our last set in Austin.  Thanks, Jason. Thanks again to Adrienne Carter and Mike Penard who both set records by coming to three shows in Austin.

A huge thank you and salute to 3rd Coast Music's publisher and Revealator, John Conquest, who puts together the annual "NotSXSW" alternative festival.  Three venues, four days.  That's gotta be hard.  John has been very generous with his reviews of our CDs and was very gracious to give us the chance to play.  It was wonderful to finally meet the guy (at Evangeline the night we got to town) and thank him in person.  You rock, John!

Friday, March 19, 2010 Evangeline Cafe (Austin, TX)

Wow.  Owner and major dude Curtis Clarke had already booked us when Bill Kirchen approached him for a gig during SXSW.  It was David's old friend Kevin Gallaugher who told Curtis that we'd played with Bill in Sellersville a couple of years back and suggested that maybe he join us.  Well, Bill, who is as nice as they come, immediately said "Yea, I played with DeSoto Rust - tell them I'll return the favor and open for them."  The rest is the high point of the tour, maybe our entire time together as a band.

Curtis fed us and kept the beer flowing, as is his practice with all musicians who play Evangeline.  The love and respect he shows musicians and the music they play has been the foundation for building Evangeline.  He's living his dream, hanging with the folks he idolized as a teenager. Good karma begets good karma.  We brought him a nice bottle of Milagro Anejo, but how can you really thank someone who has done so much for us?

Bill was his typically brilliant self, playing with only a drummer and bass player.  Kevin was worried about what he'd gotten us into, but Curtis asked Bill to sit in with us on a couple of tunes, and with the beer and the vibe and the great crowd, we were loose and ready for fun.  Bill joined us for Lonesome, Onry, and Mean and it was about the most fun you can have playing in a band.  Wow.  He hung around for Open Road, though we'll admit to throwing him a curve with that one.  (Still sounded great.) Most of the crowd stuck around for our set and things went so well, we did our DeSotorized version of Psycho Killer as an encore, David snapping a string on the ending freak out.

Thanks to our producer Joe Carroll and new wife Carrie Engdahl (keyboards on Highway Gothic) for dropping by.  Adrienne Carter and her friends, including Karen and her husband, were back for more, as was Mike Penard, who very generously gave us the bucks for "lunch on the drive back home."  All pure rock 'n' roll poetry!

Thanks to Big Rob, the bartender, Timmy the sound guy, and Polly, our wonderful waitress.  And of course, thanks to Bill Kirchen and his wife Louise.  A supremely talented man who is a regular guy when he steps off the stage.  But most of all, thanks to Curtis Clarke.  Curtis, you are the best!

Thursday, March 18, 2010 Armadillo Hall (Taylor, TX)

Taylor, TX looks for all the world like Larry McMurtry's fictional Thalia, TX in the Last Picture Show.  We started with an incredible meal at Louie Mueller's Barbeque and things just got better from there. We were the only non-Texas act on the bill this night, but the reception was fantastic.  David got to play through a Marshall stack for the first time (with help from sound guy Tommy.)  A huge thank you to Marlin Lee, who took a chance on a bunch of Yankees and worked his ass off to put together this four-day event.  You have a great venue here, Marlin.  Thanks also to head sound guy Ron, as well as sound guys Dave and Tommy.

Wednesday, March 17, 2010 Uncorked Tasting Room (Austin, TX)

Yes, Uncorked had beer and the gorgeous spring weather made the outdoor stage perfect.  We dropped by for a couple of hours early to check out the Tom Gillam Band's set (featuring our producer, Joe Carroll.)  We returned to do our own set at 7:00 - finally playing in Austin.  Thanks to Austin Collins, the host for the night, for booking us.  And thanks also to Penny Jo Pullus for serving as MC and making everyone feel welcomed.  A special thanks to old Hattiesburg, MS friend Adrienne Carter and her photographer friend Karen (who took some great photos of us with the Austin skyline as a background.)  But the biggest thanks of all goes to long time supporter Mike Penard (aka Mike the Frenchy) from France's Radio ISA.  An incredibly nice guy who has played our stuff countless times over the years.  A real honor to finally shake your hand, Mike!  And lastly, we can't forget Dave's fiance, Elizabeth "Liz" Leafey, who endured the hell of air travel to make it minutes before we took the stage.  After all, she is the unofficial "band mom."
Monday, March 15, 2010 Igor's Checkpoint Charlie's (New Orleans)

Checkpoints is part of the Igor's drinking establishment empire, which means it's open 24/7 and has laundry facilities.  Yes, people arrived at 1:00 am to do laundry and drink.  With a 7:00 kickoff, many of David's friends and family showed up for the show:  Jonathan Bachrack from the North Shore.  Jay Ginsberg and friend from New Orleans.  Vicky Ward and son Levi from Hattiesburg.  David's sister Kay Perry and her friends from Galliano.  Even Ken and Tina Fisher from the Apple Barrel show dropped in for another set.  So finally David's friends get to hear his band!  Thanks to Angelina for booking us (sorry we didn't get to meet you personally.)  And a huge thanks to bartender Heather, who set a great vibe and bought the shots of Jameson!  Can New Orleans get any better?  We were compelled to hang out for quite a while after our set - you do what you gotta do!
Sunday, March 14, 2010 The Apple Barrel Bar (New Orleans, LA)

The Apple Barrel is a tiny club in the Fauburg Marigny section of New Orleans (across Esplanade from the French Quarter.)  Sunday night was the final night of the "Foburg"  Festival, so the streets were packed.  Parking was tough, but getting the neo-hippie jug band off the small stage and out of the club was even tougher.  They stunk up the place - literally!   Turns out, our sound was a welcomed break from what the other clubs featured and we packed the place.  Using the monitors as the PA, we played sets one and two with no break (24 tunes!), and wrapped up set three around 2:00 am.  It was a blast and a great way to kick things off in New Orleans.  Thanks so much to Liz for booking us and for paying us more than the guarantee.  Thanks also to J.D. the bartender for keeping the Abita Amber flowing.  And a very special thanks to Ken and Tina Fisher from Des Moines.  Multiple rounds of beer and extreme generosity.  We're ready to move to New Orleans.
Friday, March 12, 2010 Manhattan's Club (Knoxville, TN)
Our first stop on the Southern Bound Tour 2010.  Manhattan's is in Knoxville's old city.  The crowd was small (University of Tennessee on spring break), but enthusiastic as we performed two of our three sets.  They fed us, kept the Pabst flowing, and paid us generously.  All good and a great way to kick things off.  Thanks to Sean Blair for booking us.  Thanks also to bartender Mike and sound guy Allan.

Saturday, February 13, 2010 John & Peter's Place
It was somewhat a comedy of errors and we braved snow drifts and wolves to make it to New Hope.  Dave forgot the bag with his bass pedal and sticks, but managed a trip to Guitar Center while Ray, Steve and David did the mandolin tunes.  But once we got going it was a great afternoon.  Special thanks to Jeff Stupak, who first tried to see us at the Dickey Betts show (that didn't exactly work out!) He not only made the drive, but treated us to a round of Beam - very nice, Jeff!  Thanks as always to Lauren and the rest of the J&P's staff for their hospitality and support.
Friday, January 29, 2010 Chaplin's
We shared the stage with a fine young band, Driving Vegas, and soul/blues/R&B guitar player Jim George.  Chaplin's is a great BYOB music place in Spring City.  Really nice people and a great sound system.  Thanks to the Chaplin's staff, as well as the two couples who shared their wine, purchased a copy of Highway Gothic, and really dug our set.
Saturday, January 23, 2010 Pennant East
The Pennant East is somewhat of a South Jersey music mecca, with a big stage and great sound.  Always fun to perform when we can use our "big sound."  Tonight we premiered our cover of REM's Rockville, which we of course have "desotorized" appropriately.  Thanks to Amy and the other friends who made it out.  Thanks also to the most excellent sound crew.  And a big shout out to Jailbreak, whose set of metal and other covers was fabulous.
Friday, January 8, 2010 Barrington Coffee House
BCH is a great little music room in the heart of Barrington.  Good food, wonderful coffee and deserts, and great music. Once again,  Arthur Herrmann performed the opening set doing tunes on both Hawaiian slide guitar and 12-string. Thanks again to Scott "Trif" Trifeletti who hosted and did sound.  He's been playing Highway Gothic as part of the BCH's regular rotation, and on his car stereo!  Lastly, thanks to Arthur's friends who stayed (and enjoyed) our set.
Saturday, December 19, 2009 Hucklebucks - Cancelled
Blind Pigeon Record's Hootenanny 2009, the release party for the label's annual compilation CD, continued without us.  Due to the blizzard, we were unable to make the drive up to Pottsville.  A huge thanks to friend Bill Whalen of Gleasons Drift who put together the show and invited us to put San Angelo on this, the seventh compilation disk.  Stay tuned for details on how to get your copy.
Friday, December 11, 2009 Cherrywood Lounge - Cancelled

Saturday, November 21, 2009 John & Peter's Place
Six months is the longest we've ever gone without a John & Peter's gig, and it was fabulous to be back as we played all 33 tunes from the current active list.  As usual, a huge thank you hug goes out to the lovely Lauren for doing such a great job taking care of us as well as the rest of the J&P patrons.  (Congratulations also to her sister, Jessica, who gave birth to a daughter three months ago.)  Thanks to David's co-worker Kathy Cable and friend for dropping in, as well as to the other people who enjoyed our stuff.  We had a blast.
Saturday, November 14, 2009 Beehive Pub
Our first gig at the recently renamed White Horse Pike landmark.  Thanks to Dave Cherby for booking us with Tom Malm and the always entertaining Scott Rocks.  Thanks also to sound guy Tony (formerly of the Cherrywood.)  Special thanks to Greg G. for being Fan #1 and dropping in to check out the music.
Thursday, November 12, 2009 The Blinkin Lincoln (at Holy Smokes)
Russell has moved the Blinkin Lincoln a few blocks up Ridge Avenue to the great barbeque joint, Holy Smokes.  Big space, big stage, big sound.  And barbeque!  As usual, Russ and Jake served up the good times.  Talkin' baseball and guitars and music.  Thanks to the both of them, as well as Holy Smokes, for being such great supporters of local music.  Speaking of which, the Roddies, the nights headliner, are a great band.  Two brothers, a cousin and an unrelated drummer.  So the "blood harmonies" were thick in the material which had a definite Southern Rock thang going on.  We hope to play with them again soon.
Saturday, November 7, 2009 Hucklebucks
We were the headliners (and only act) tonight, so we performed two long sets to a great Pottsville crowd.  Hucklebucks is a fantastic local bar with a friendly, music-loving crowd.  Thanks to the lovely Michelle who tended bar.  Special thanks to (former?) Gleasons Drift bass player Greg Lowe who provided the back roads directions to avoid the sobriety checkpoint (not that we couldn't have passed the test!)  The mountain roads at 2:00 am sounded scarier than being busted.  Fortunately, no check point tonight.  Lastly a big thank you to Liz Leafy for working the door and Jeannie Welsh for assisting.
Saturday, October 17, 2009 MilkBoy Coffee Acoustic Cafe
More rain?  Thanks to the MilkBoy staff.  Special thanks to Ilene Marker, her sister Andrea, and Andrea's lovely daughter Evie for braving the weather to check us out.
Saturday, September 27, 2009 Garry Owen Irish Pub
Why does it always seem to rain when we do an out of town gig?  No matter, we had a blast playing our first gig at the Garry Owen Irish Pub in the heart of historic Gettysburg.  The rustic pub has a great Ireland meets Civil War sort of vibe, with good food and wonderful beers on tap.  But most of all, this is a club for music lovers.  As soon as we cranked up the first set, people moved from the bar into the adjacent room where we performed, and we definitely made some new fans. (We gave away the last of the Bypass EPs, as we expect to take delivery of Highway Gothic this week.) Thanks so much to Kevin, the Pub's owner, and Derrick for their graciousness as our hosts for the evening.  A couple of very nice guys who definitely appreciate the work that goes into what we do.  We'll be back!
Friday, September 25, 2009 MilkBoy Coffee Acoustic Cafe
Who drinks coffee on a Friday night?  More people than you'd think!  Thanks as always to our good friend Greg G. for dropping by.  Thanks also to David's day-gig boss, Vera, for checking out his band for the first time.  And a special thanks to major fan Donna (unable to attend) for sending her friends Bill and Beth.  We think we just made some new fans.
Friday, September 11, 2009 Bus Stop Music Cafe
Who knew that there was a place where you could hear great live music, shop for cds and vintage vinyl, get some grub and bring your own bottle?  Well, the Bus Stop in Pitman, NJ is just that place.  Openers Bizarre Silence performed excellent blues influenced rock - how did they learn to play that way so young?  Meanwhile, there was shopping for vinyl!  A pristine copy of Traffic's John Barleycorn Must Die.  Thanks so much to Victor and Karen Martinson, and to sound man Francis.  We had a blast and hope to return.
Saturday, August 22, 2009 Cherrywood Lounge
Always a great time at the Cherrywood.  Thanks much to Bullwinkle (Mike) for booking us and thanks to Tagg for the excellent sound.  And, of course, thanks to the folks who braved Hurricane Bill's fringes to come out and hear the music.
Friday, August 14, 2009 Barrington Coffee House
This was our first gig at this very cool music venue.  Great sound system and a crowd that shows up to appreciate live music.  Arthur Herrmann, a regular performer here, did a great opening set with tasty slide guitar and fine covers and originals.  Thanks so much to Triff for hosting and doing such a good job with the sound.  Thanks also to all our South Jersey friends who dropped by:  Norm, Deano, Dave, as well as their families, dates and friends.  We always appreciate the support.
Friday, July 24, 2009 Hucklebucks
Our friends Gleasons Drift have a standing gig at Hucklebucks, a 1898-vintage bar in the heart of Pottsville, and invited us to join the fun tonight (can you say Yuengling Lager?)  A spirited and appreciative crowd packed the place and it was a gas.  Thanks to sound/light guys Drew and Nick for a great job.  Thanks also to Hucklebucks and the lovely bartender whose name we didn't catch (the overalls and pigtails were cute as hell.)  And of course thanks to Bill, Greg, Tim and John, the boys of Gleasons Drift, for inviting us to share the bill.  If you haven't heard these guys, be sure to check them out. They put on a really fun show and we'll be playing with them again soon.  As an added bonus, we all made it through the sobriety checkpoint.  Even better!
Saturday, July 18, 2009 YachtStock 2009
The YachtStock River Jam, now in its 10th year, raises money to benefit a variety of children's charities.  Held at the West End Boat Club marina in Essington, the event features a variety of music, including the first appearance by DSR.  A gorgeous day and a great crowd.  Thanks to George Spicer, Steve Kurtz and everyone at YachtStock for letting us be a part of the event and being so receptive to our stuff.  Thanks also to Albie, Earl and the rest of the guys at Arsenal Sound for the the great mix and wonderful onstage sound.
Saturday, June 20, 2009 The Nauti-Goose Saloon - rained out
Friday, June 19, 2009 Dawson Street Pub
This was our first gig in the newly renovated Dawson Street Pub.  Renovated, but still a great neighborhood bar with nice vibe and a killer selection of beers on tap.  Thanks to Dave for booking us and Steve for serving up the beers.  Thanks also to our friend Donna, as well as Greg G. and Keith Kenney for dropping in for the fun.
Friday, June 12, 2009 The Nauti-Goose Saloon
The Nauti-Goose is a fantastic seafood restaurant and bar in North East, MD.  The outdoor decks overlook a marina on the extreme northern end of the Chesapeake, and provide a perfect spot for watching the summer sun go down while sipping a beverage and listening to live music.  We got to play 3+ sets to a receptive crowd while enjoying the beer and view ourselves.  Actually played every tune on our currently active set list, including the both the "regular" and mandolin versions of Weather and Way Back to You.  A huge thanks to Joe Thompson for booking us (he and Dave met at a Dead show.) Thanks also to Amanda, Lenny and the other nice staff.  We look forward to returning next weekend and hopefully for more dates after that.

Crocodile Rock

When you don't actually play, do you make an entry into the gig archives?  In a new low, even for club owners who don't give a fuck about either bands or music, we were bumped from the bill with Dickey Betts.  Some convoluted story about him doing two sets, some opener writing a $25,000 check to get on the tour, etc., but what the hell.  The dude had our number.  Nevertheless, we fought two hours of traffic to get there for the load in, only to be offered the chance to play (maybe) for the people filing in the front bar/pizza shop on their way to the real stage.  No apology, no anything, just the big Pennsylvania shrug.  We left.  Guess we fuckin' showed them.  I don't think we'll be back here........David and Jeannie picked a great place to celebrate their anniversary, didn't they?
Friday, May 15, 2009 MilkBoy Coffee Acoustic Cafe
It was nice to see some folks drinking more than coffee, but then again, it was a Friday night in Bryn Mawr.  We played two long sets, including everything from Highway Gothic and all of our mandolin tunes.  In keeping with the lo-fi setting, Dave used his snare case in lieu of a bass drum and it sounded great. A very fun night in front of a very receptive crowd.  Thanks to Lauren and the MilkBoy staff.  Special thanks to Donna for making a special trip to see us; she's rapidly ascending to the role of #1 fan.  Thanks also to Chris and the other nice folks who fed the tip jar and walked away with copies of the Bypass EP.  See you again soon!
Saturday, May 9, 2009 John & Peter's Place
Always nice to be back in New Hope, especially after our long break for the studio.  Keith Kenney delivered a powerful solo set; he's a really talented guitar player with an engaging stage presence.  Thanks to all the folks who dropped in and dug what we were doing, especially the gentleman from the 1974 Hershey Bears Calder Cup team.  Thanks as always to the lovely Lauren for playing host, as well as to the rest of the J&P staff.  We love you guys!
Saturday, May 2, 2009 The Blinkin Lincoln
The Blinkin Lincoln, located in Manayunk/Roxborough, shares facilities with Coyle's Restaurant.  This is truly a club for listening to music, with a great sound system and two guys, Russ and Jake, who are committed to original music.  So first off, thanks to the two of them for getting us together with Gleasons Drift for a great night of music.  Thanks also to sound guy Reid for doing such an excellent job, particularly with the mandolin on Weather, Six Appeals, and Way Back to You.  Shout outs to promoter Kurt Hess, DJ Greg G. and musician (and Jake's band mate ) Scott Silipigni for stopping in to lend support.  Special thanks to long-time fan Donna whom we know from our gigs at the Dawson Street Pub.  Thanks also to Bill and the other guys in Gleasons Drift for such a great opening set.  We'll be returning the favor this July when we play in their stomping grounds at Hucklebucks in Pottsville.  We performed all of the tunes from Highway Gothic tonight and handed out free copies of our preview EP, Bypass, which features first mixes of San Angelo, Wait on His Memory and New Morning (which we performed in public for the first time.)
Thursday, April 23, 2009 MilkBoy Coffee Acoustic Cafe
We took advantage of the intimate setting of MilkBoy to go heavy on the mandolin, performing the alternate mando versions of Weather, Stronger than the Knife, and Way Back to You, as well as Six Appeals, which always features the mando.  Thanks to the staff of MilkBoy and the folks who dropped in to check out the music.
Thursday, April 9, 2009 Mojo 13
Mojo 13 is really one of the most eclectic clubs we've played in a long time.  Located on Philadelphia Pike in Wilmington, the interior is decorated in a circus/carnival/side show/freak show motif with lots of artwork, found objects (a guillotine???) and best of all, a great sound system.  (Thanks here to sound guy Mike.)  The gig was made even more special for David with old Louisiana cajun buddy Yuless Aucoin visiting for the night.  We hope to be back for a weekend night soon.  (Also on the bill, the Groovement and Drive Fast Take Chances.)
Saturday, March 14, 2009 Cherrywood Lounge
We were really excited about our return to gigging, in part to try out some of our new material that we hadn't yet performed in public.  In fact, we kicked off the set with "San Angelo", likely the opener on Highway Gothic.  We also debuted "Calgary (Northwestern Drive)" and the reworked "All Riders and All Nighters" (played at a faster tempo in the studio.) Thanks very much to Dave Cherby and Lauren from Fearless Entertainment for booking us and promoting the show.  Thanks also to Greg G. and Liz's friends from NFL Films (Craig, Jay, and Tamer) who shot some video of the set.  Also a shout out to musician friend Scott Rocks. And of course, thanks to the Cherrywood and the sound crew.  Whew!
Saturday, December 13, 2008 John & Peter's Place
Probably our last gig before heading into the studio, and it was a fun one.  We debuted mandolin versions of "Weather", "Way Back to You" and "Stronger Than the Knife."  Thanks to the nice folks up from Chestertown, MD.  Special thanks also to Lauren, who always makes us feel like we're at home.
Friday, December 12, 2008 The Record Collector
What a great place to perform (and shop!)  The Record Collector, John Chrambanis's excellent music store in the heart of historic Bordentown, has an awesome selection of vinyl, posters, CDs, and sheet music. The place is an audiophile's dream.  (Who could pass on a vinyl copy of James Brown's Christmas album?)  Randy Now, WTSR DJ, produces these shows and provides excellent sound.  Lori Lampkin performed an great opening set.  We had a fabulous time and look forward to returning with our new CD.  Thanks so much to Randy and John for the opportunity, and more importantly, for keeping great music alive and available.
Saturday, October 4, 2008 John & Peter's Place
This was an especially fun gig, even more fun than usual at John & Peter's, in part because (pardon the lack of modesty) we sounded at the top of our game.  Thanks to the friends and family who dropped by:  Greg G., Dave's brother, Mike, Ray's Mom and stepdad - did we leave anyone out?  Thanks as always to Lauren and the rest of the J&P's staff.
Thursday, September 18, 2008 Love Park

The last golden rays of the summer sun reflected off Robert Indiana's LOVE sculpture.  Sigh. Shout outs to the friends who dropped by - John, Donna, Ilene, Cathy and all the rest.  Howdy to the guy who claimed to be Sir Richard Branson, though we suspect he may have been homeless.  Thanks again to sound man Itzik from the City's Communications Department for the fine mix.  Thanks also to Tim Gill and Sabina Nicola of the Fairmount Park Visitor's Center at Love Park.  Photo courtesy of John LaCroix.
Friday, September 12, 2008 MilkBoy Coffee Acoustic Cafe
Thanks to the staff of MilkBoy and the folks who dropped in to check out the music.  Thanks and good luck to opener Lizzy Picciallo, who's living the dream and touring the country playing at "pick up" gigs.  Do it while you can, Lizzy!  Great piano cover of Radiohead's "Creep", by the way.
Saturday, July 26, 2008 John & Peter's Place
Three sets of pure DSR featuring the world premier of a new tune, "Wait on His Memory."   For those of you counting, that's nine new tunes ready for recording on our third release.  Thanks to Erica, Chris, Amanda, Phil and Mark for dropping by, as well as our old friend, Greg G.  Thanks as always to the John and Peter's staff, especially Lauren (not Jess's sister, but the other Lauren.)
Friday, July 18, 2008 Cherrywood Lounge
The Cherrywood has expanded its stage and sound system since our last gig.  What was already a great place for live music is now second to none.  It was a perfect opportunity for David to break in his new Fender "stack".  Thanks very much to Dave Cherby, long-time South Jersey friend of Dave and Steve, for booking us.  Thanks also to Glenn Lowery and Phil Rowland for stopping by and lending support.  Special thanks to Anthony Renzulli, who not only plays music in his own right, but also does a great job running sound at the Cherrywood.
Friday, June 6, 2008 Auction House
The Auction House in Audubon, NJ is a very cool venue.  This former bank building is chock full of great old furniture and curios, as well as professional-grade theater lighting and sound.  Thanks to our South Jersey friends for dropping by, and thanks to the management of the Auction House.  Special thanks to Jay, the sound guy, who did a masterful job for us, East of Nowhere, and JeNell and the Yets.
Friday, May 16, 2008 MilkBoy Coffee Acoustic Cafe
A big shout out to former DSR bass player and founding member Mike Simmons and wife Deb who dropped by to check out our set.  Good seeing you guys.  Thanks also to David's son James, home from Syracuse and in the audience to see his old man on the Jag. And, of course, thanks to the MilkBoy staff.
Saturday, May 10, 2008 Dawson Street Pub
Three sets and the debut of more new material: "Open Road" and "Six Appeals" featuring David on Mandolin.  Special thanks to David's old Mississippi friend, Larry Gandy, for the loan of his Flatiron mando.

Thanks again to Dave, Maureen, Jake and Steve for making us feel really welcome and allowing us to have such a great time.  One of our favorite places to gig.

Saturday, April 19, 2008 John & Peter's Place

This was an extra special gig featuring one of David's old friends from his New Orleans days, Kevin Gallaugher, as the opener.  Kevin, who now lives in Austin, finger picks traditional country blues on a vintage 1943 Gibson model "00".  The crowd, which grew as Kevin played, really dug his material.  David joined Kevin on stage for versions of "Jesus Christ", "Miller's Cave" and "Goodnight Irene".  (They hadn't played together for ten years, but did some late night picking after Kevin arrived on Friday.)  What a great time.

DSR performed two sets and debuted a new Ray tune, the rockabilly-influenced "Two Loads Overweight".   Special thanks to blues rocker Tom Malm (we played with Tom at the David Allan Coe show) as well as Janet Bressler, who also dropped in.  Thanks as always to the J&P staff, especially Lauren who not only serves up a mean Jameson's, but knows a thing or two about running a sound system.

Saturday, March 15, 2008 MilkBoy Coffee Acoustic Cafe
This proves there really is life between "2" and "1" on the master volume knob!  Our first gig at such a small venue and we were very pleased with the results.  We used the same instrumentation as our WTSR performance, with Dave on snare only.  Thanks to the staff of MilkBoy and a special thanks to old friend Greg G.  Nice to see you back in circulation, man!
Friday, March 7, 2008 Dawson Street Pub
The weather stunk, but the crowd, the drink, and the vibe were excellent in Manayunk.  Recently placing #13 in the Philadelphia Weekly "Best Bars in Philly", the Dawson Street Pub has great beer, great food, and great bartenders.  If you haven't been, you gotta go.

Thanks again to Dave, Jake and Steve for making us feel really welcome and allowing us to have such a great time.  Thanks also to all the folks who braved the weather to check us out - glad you had as much fun as we did!

Saturday, March 1, 2008 John & Peter's Place
It was great being back at John & Peter's, particularly after a long hiatus.  To celebrate, we performed two sets, essentially performing the entire current song list.  Ray played his new Gretsch arch-top  acoustic and we had a great time.  Thanks as always to J&P's, especially Lauren.  See you in April.

Crocodile Rock

The area around Allentown is definitely part of David Allan Coe country, which begins in the deep South and follows the Appalachians all the way up to the Canadian border.  You wouldn't have confused tonight's show with an Obama rally!  People were lined up outside this huge rock club at 5:30, and we performed our opening set for several hundred rowdy DAC fans.  The sound at Crocodile Rock is great.  Our set included the second performance of Ray's All Riders & All Nighters, complete with four-part harmonies.  It was a blast.

DAC took the stage resplendent in his waist-length blonde wig and three-foot long beard braids.  He charged into an extended medley of his tunes along with some country standards.  The crowd went beserk.

Thanks to Bryant, Gritzz's lead singer, and his wife for making the trip to see us, as well as to GCT guest keyboard player Jim Poulicci.  Special thanks also to Liz Winchester of Red Haired Girl Publicity.

Friday, January 18, 2008 Dawson Street Pub
This was a dynamite gig!  We can't say enough good things about the Dawson Street Pub, a great neighborhood bar tucked on a side street in Manayunk.  People come here not just for the great bar food and excellent selection of beers on tap, but for the music.  We played three sets (the whole catalog) to a full bar and had a blast. Tonight was the debut of three new tunes:  Dirt Track Mile, Way Back to You, and All Riders and All Nighters. Special thanks to David and Jake of Dawson Street for the great treatment.  Thanks also to Russ (who caught our last show there) for dropping in and requesting Goin' Home.  Thanks also to new fan Donna for the enthusiasm, and a shout out to Liz's friends from NFL films.  It was also nice to see old friend Greg G. out and about after the recent tragedy in his life.  Hang in there for better days, buddy.

We can't wait to return on March 7!

Wednesday, January 16, 2008  WTSR Live Performance

For Ray and David, this was a return appearance (August 22, 2007), but for the whole band it was a first.  DJ Randy Now hosts his Capital Garage show every Wednesday from 6:00 - 9:00 PM featuring an eclectic mix of excellent music (think everything from Commander Cody to the Cramps) and was nice enough to invite the whole band in for a performance.  Dave played a stripped-down drum kit (his new Gretsch kit!) and we performed "almost acoustic"  versions of Austin Lights, Backyard, Easytown, Lonesome, On'ry and Mean, Weather, Northern Road, Morgan Rhule, 5 on 7, and Close Up the Honky Tonks.  Promoter Kurt Hess also dropped by to talk about the upcoming Memorial Day weekend fest at Just Plain Janes.

Thanks not only to Randy, but to Mark (Repo) the engineer who managed to make the whole thing work despite some equipment being locked away for semester break.  Thanks also to Mark for the photos and video.  We'd love to come back.

Check Randy's site (click the link above) to listen to a podcast of the show.

Wednesday, October 31, 2007 Fergie’s Pub
A fine Halloween night in Center City.  We performed in our "lo-fi" (almost acoustic) configuration - something we've been doing more of lately. Thanks very much to Joe McGarvey and East of Nowhere for inviting us to open for them.  Thanks to the folks who found their way to the music upstairs.  Special thanks to Greg G. for dropping in.

Sunday, October 7, 2007 John & Peter's Place
Summer weather continues and New Hope was packed.  Thanks to Blue Frances '62 Music Show for the fine opening set of country blues.  Thanks also to Lauren and the rest of the J&P staff, and welcome back to long-time fan Andy (long time no see.)

Friday, October 5, 2007 Dawson Street Pub
Thanks to Sheli Aarden and daughter Melissa for the wonderful opening set (those "blood harmonies!)  Special thanks to Jake, the bartender (and lead guitarist for Scott Silipigni) for playing the gracious host, as well as to Pub cook Steve, for the enthusiastic support.  We performed again in a semi-unplugged format (though Dave used a bass drum this time) and it was a gas.  Once our sabbatical is over, expect us return to the Dawson Street Pub.

Thursday, September 27, 2007 Love Park
Ah, lunch hour in Love Park! Today featured a parade by the Service Workers International labor union (Viva la Revolution!), another call to the paramedics as someone passes out, and a 19-song set by DeSoto Rust.  Thanks to Lester on sound, as well as Sabina and Tim from the Fairmount Park Visitor's Center.  We'll be back next summer!

Saturday, September 15, 2007 Cherrywood Lounge
Thanks to the South Jersey fans who came out to see a great lineup.  Blue Frances '62 Music Show, the Delcats, and East of Nowhere shared the bill.  (Was this a night of great guitar playing or what?)

Thursday, September 6, 2007 Love Park

A beautiful late summer day in Center City.  Thanks to Tim Gill and Sabina Nicola of the Fairmount Park Visitor's Center at Love Park.  Special thanks to sound man Itzik from the City's Communications Department for the fine mix.  Hello to Donna, Sue, Lisa and Margie from David's former employer.  We return to the location of Robert Indiana's LOVE sculpture on 9/27, so check us out!
Saturday, September 1, 2007 The Blue Parrot
Our first appearance at this New Orleans-themed Wilmington bar and restaurant on day one of the Blues 'n Rock Party.  Thanks much to Jim for putting us on the bill.  We look forward to returning for a weekend night soon.

Wednesday, August 29, 2007

Dawson Street Pub

We were "nearly unplugged" at the Dawson Street Pub with Ray and Steve playing directly through the P.A., David turned way down, and Dave using only a snare and brushes.  Great fun and a very successful experiment for a performance in a small room - expect to hear us in this configuration again.  Thanks to Bill Butler, a talented guitar player and singer who runs the open mic night (we were the "featured" band.)  Thanks also to bartender Maureen and the patrons who dug the tunes.  Expect to see us back here as a weekend headliner.

Saturday, August 25, 2007 Just Plain Janes' Jersey Jamfest

It was 98 degrees when things kicked off in Jackson, NJ, but you'd never have known it from the crowd and the energy as everyone awaited the arrival of the Legendary George Frayne (AKA Commander Cody.)  Michael Brett opened the show, followed by Sheli Aarden's daugher, Melissa, then Sheli herself.  Kudos to the sound guys for such a great job.  Michael Patrick and the Suburban Hillbillies followed us, then George arrived with his great four-piece backing band (killer leads and pedal steel.)  George needed a cane to get around, but his vocals and piano playing were incredible.  The whole set ripped and caused spontaneous dancing on the part of some of the crowd (including the guy Ray knick-named "Blue" - nothing like tequila and beer in the 98 degree weather!)  We gotta give a big shout out to promoter Kurt Hesse for putting together such a first-class event.  Great music, great food, great sound, and cold beer for the bands - what more can you ask?  We look forward to working with Kurt again. Check out the photos.
Saturday, August 18, 2007 John & Peter's Place
Tonight featured the impromptu world premier of Ray's new tune Northern Road.  Our friends Gleasons Drift delivered a great opening set (check these guys out!)  Thanks to everyone who came out.  Thanks also to Cloe and the staff at John & Peter's - especially Jess.  See y'all in October!

Sunday, July 22, 2007 The Trash Bar
A beautiful summer evening in Brooklyn, after a really slow drive through the shore traffic.  Thanks to David the sound guy for the great mix and the recording.  Thanks also for the encouragement and support.  To roughly quote "It's really refreshing to hear a band do straight-ahead rock.  I really enjoyed your set!".  Also on the bill:  Delusions of Grand Street, Fifty Habit, and Zed Never.  We really dig this place!

Saturday, July 21, 2007 John & Peter's Place
Thanks to Crackerjack Gypsies for the very nice opening set.  Thanks also to Greg G. for the continued support.  Best of luck to Greg's wife as she battles her illness.  Of course, thanks also to all our friends at J&Ps, especially Lauren (on duty this afternoon) and her sister, Jess.

Cherrywood Lounge

Friday night in South Jersey and judging from the crowd at the Cherrywood Liquor store, it would be a wild one.  A great crowd at the lounge also.  Pottstown's Gleasons Drift, the Scott Rocks Band and Glen Landing shared the bill.  For a change in the texture of the set, Ray played his acoustic and David trotted out the Telecaster.   Thanks to the sound crew and also to Donna and Sue for making it to the show.  See you ladies in Love Park in September!

Sunday, April 22, 2007

The Hilltop Inn

South of the Mason-Dixon line near Elkton, MD!  When we pulled up to the Hilltop on a gorgeous spring day, it wasn't a surprise to see around a hundred motorcycles parked outside.  A spirited crowd which grew more spirited as the afternoon turned to evening.  Gritzz, Dave Reeve and Steve Savage's country cover band, is insanely popular at the Hilltop.  We appreciated the opportunity to tap into that vibe.  Catch them if you get a chance.  Thanks to Bryant, Mike, and all the other Gritzz members. Nice show!  (Today's DSR set featured the live premier of GCT's Swept in It Again, and a new Ray-penned tune, Weather.)

Saturday, April 21, 2007

Cherrywood Lounge

A great lineup and a great crowd.  Pottstown's Gleasons Drift and Delaware's the Delcats got things started.  The night was closed out by Spur, the excellent three-piece southern metal band.  Special thanks to Tom Gillam and wife Caroline for making it to the show.  We will be back in June!

Sunday, April 15, 2007 The Trash Bar
We've done blizzards at Whiskey Dix, we've had flooding at John & Peter's, and now it was time for a freakish spring nor'easter in Brooklyn.  Kudos to Ray and Dave for handling the wheel work!  The Trash Bar ("Rat Free Since '93!) is a very cool club in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn.  We arrived just as the non-denominational church service, held Sunday evenings, was breaking up.  The Von Ehrics, from Dallas, delivered a great cowpunk set, but  we headed back to Philly and didn't catch Boston's Madison Project.  Thanks to Mark, the sound guy and to the other nice folks at the Trash Bar.  We'll be back!

Saturday, March 3, 2007 Whiskey Dix

When the fire alarm went off, everyone assumed at first that it was a single off Wilco's upcoming new release.  But we were all hustled outside for a few minutes while the fire fighters checked the building next door, leaving our half-finished PBRs to get warm.  Still, always a great night at Whiskey Dix.  Thanks again to Tom Gillam and Joe Carroll.
Saturday, February 24, 2007 John & Peter's Place

Elmar (left) and Hans

Sunny and no snow!!??  Yes, it was great day to get out and treat that cabin fever. Scott Rocks and his trio delivered an eclectic set of originals (plus a cover of "All the Young Dudes") that left everyone looking for the keyboards.  (That was Scott using some of the many pedals he uses to craft his psychedelic sound.)  We were honored to have some returning fans who caught us at our last J&P show - Elmar and Hans from Germany.  They've been working on a project in Trenton and had picked up our CDs at the last show.  Their friends back in Europe also dug the music.  So thanks again guys, and enjoy the rest of your time in the States!  Thanks to everyone who made it to the show.  Thanks especially to Lauren and Jen and all the staff at John & Peter's.

Friday, February 16, 2007 Sellersville Theater 1894

Bill and DSR/The Hammer

Wow.  Playing this great venue with the legendary Bill Kirchen was a real honor.  Bill is an incredibly nice guy and, of course, a Honky Tonk God.  Watching a master play the Fender Telecaster is a truly humbling experience for us mere mortals.  Getting to hang with him made it that much better.  From the material on his new album (Hammer of the Honky Tonk Gods) to his material with Commander Cody, Bill put on one fabulous show.  Hoots & Hellmouth, who are just kicking off a national tour, followed our set with a fine acoustic performance.  Thanks to Dan, who delivered a great mix, and to Jessica, the venue's hostess for the evening.  Thanks also to the ushers and all the rest of the friendly staff.  The Sellersville Theater 1984 is a beautifully renovated old theater with great seating and great sound.  It draws a very serious crowd of music lovers.  Of course, thanks also to Bill.

Sunday, January 14, 2007 John & Peter's Place
Our debut with new bass player Steve Savage was a gas.  Felt really great to get back on stage and play to an enthusiastic crowd.  A. D. Chandler played a great opening set of his blues-influenced originals.  On hand for the fun, Greg G. of WBZC, Joe Carroll from Tom Gillam's Tractor Pull, singer Janet Bressler, as well as local supporter Andy (long time, no see!)  Thanks to Lauren and everyone at John & Peter's for a fine time as always.  And once more, welcome Steve!

Whiskey Dix

Roots Rock Revival VII

This was Mike's last gig with the band and it felt great for him to go out on such a high note.  With Tom Gillam's Tractor Pull, Gas Money, Chris Day, and Scott Reynold Phillipp on the bill, there was a enthusiastic crowd for the entire night.  A fabulous time had by all.  Thanks much to Tom (and Joe Carroll) for inviting us to play - great set, by the way, guys!  Best of luck to Mike as he continues to make music.

Saturday, August 26, 2006 John & Peter's Place
All we need are some beads and feathers to begin holding ourselves out as rain makers.  DSR plays New Hope; it rains.  Lonesome Killers performed a tasty opening set (thanks to Joe McGarvey and the guys) and the afternoon was a blast.  Thanks as always to Jess and everyone at J&P's.

Saturday, June 24, 2006 John & Peter's Place
Chris Moore came down from NYC to deliver a very nice opening set of original material.  We played a 19-song mega set, featuring most of our debut CD, as well as Day Like No Other Day, Backyard, Dark at Five, Easytown, John Young, Far Side of Town, Headin' Down to Georgia, and Last Time You Fell in Love from Greene Country Towne.  This was also our first show to feature the expanded instrumentation of GCT, with Ray playing 6 and 12-string acoustic/electric (in addition to his Gretsch), as well as swapping out bass with Mike.  Of course, it always rains when we play J&P's, but the crowd was great and it was a really fun show.  Thanks Chris Moore, Jess and everyone at J&P's, as well as the friends and fans who checked us out!  Expect some Liz Leafy photos soon.

Saturday, May 13, 2006 Whiskey Dix

Tom Gillam All Star Benefit Concert

DSR kicked off the show (Dave's county cover band, Gritzz, had a commitment later in the evening) with a short set:  Morgan Rhule, Far Side of Town, Backyard, and Austin Lights.  Tom was there, looking good as he recovers from the heart attack he suffered upon his return from SXSW earlier in the year.  Joe Carroll, Tom's wife Caroline, and many other folks worked really hard to pull off this great benefit show.  We appreciated the opportunity to be a part of the evening.  Amazing performances and a great time had by all!

Saturday, March 25, 2006 John & Peter's Place
Debut of two new songs from Greene Country Towne:  Backyard and Day Like No Other Day.  The Anthony Renzulli Band delivered a very tasty opening set and helped pack the back room at J&P's.  Thanks to all the friends and strangers who checked out the set (especially Gordon, Maggie, friends and family), and, as usual, to Jess and Jen and everyone at John & Peter's.

Whiskey Dix

Roots Rock Revival 2

The Show

OK, there was literally a snowstorm outside, and the Wu Tang Clan reunion going on next door made for a surreal juxtaposition of pop culture.  But inside Whiskey Dix, it was a party.  Thanks much to Tom Gillam (nominated last year as new/emerging artist of the year at the Americana Music Association conference) for inviting us to celebrate his birthday and appear on such an awesome bill.  Thanks also to Tractor Pull's Joe Carroll (Tom's producer and alter-ego) for the logistics and assistance.  Tom was fabulous, as usual.  We weren't familiar with either Scott Silipigni or Malone and McWilliams, but they're both great.  Catch them if you get the chance.  Thanks especially to David, Whiskey Dix's sound guy. Also a big thanks to Christine Havrilla for dropping by.  She and her singing partner Gretchen Schultz have done some wonderful backing vocals for our soon-to-be released new CD.  Lastly, a big welcome back to Liz Leafy, out of the hospital and looking great.

The Other Show

While the bands rocked on stage, there was a special "appearance" by the "ladies" of Mr. Groper.com (find the link yourself, you pig!), the "south of the border", somewhat low-rent competitor to "Girls Gone Wild".  Hard not to get the feeling that there were times when the crowd wasn't paying too much attention to the music.  (Hey, you can't lick that in Pennsylvania!)  Frankly, we could have done without the guy who felt he had to join in by dropping his drawers.  (Dave seems to have been permanently scarred by the unexpected sighting.  No time to avert his eyes from the disturbing sight!)  The question haunting us is how do the guys on the crew get this sort of job and do they get paid, too?

Sunday, January 15, 2006 The Khyber
Does Old City always jump like this on a Sunday night?  Odds Are brought out all their friends, most of whom stayed for Shutter, yours truly and Carson's Machine.  The Khyber has a great selection of local brews on tap and is still the place to catch amazing up and coming bands.  All that and no one got a parking ticket!
Saturday, December 3, 2005 John & Peter's Place
Curtis Eller, our banjo-playing friend from New York, was his usual engaging self and delivered a great opening set to an appreciative crowd.  Always fun seeing Curtis work a crowd, though the low ceiling on the J&P's stage did inhibit his jumping a bit!  Thanks to all the folks who sought refuge from the cold wind and checked out the show.  Thanks especially to WBZC's Greg G. for the round of Beam and to Liz's friends for the support.  As always, thanks to Jessica and the rest of the John & Peter's staff for the great time.
Thursday, October 13, 2005 The Fire
Still raining.  Thanks to Cincinnati's 500 Miles to Memphis for inviting us to play with them at their first Philly appearance.  (Hope to play with you in Cincinnati sometime.)  Thanks also to Dan, the Fire's sound guy.
Saturday, October 8, 2005 John & Peter's Place
Rain, rain, rain.  But it didn't stop everyone from having a great time in New Hope.  (In fact, what better way to spend a rainy Saturday than hunkered down in a great bar listening to some twang?)  Joe McGarvey's new band Lonesome Killers performed a fantastic opening set.  (Hard to believe that this was their first gig.)  It felt really great to be on stage after a couple of months off, and we had as much fun as the crowd.  Thanks to Lonesome Killers and their friends, as well as to Kate, who worked the back room, and of course to all of our friends at John & Peter's.  (No one wrecked going home, either.)

Greg G. and the boys

"Morgan Rhule says it's time for a shot of Jim Beam if you Can't Sleep at Night, and For What It's Worth, Make It Last."  And thusly did WBZC's Greg G. introduce us at Scenefest '05.  The Paradise Lakes Campground in Hammonton, NJ (Blueberry Capital of the World!) rocked hard all day long at this, the first Scenefest.  Greg served as MC, supplied prizes for the raffle, and joined us on stage for the ritual "Jim Beam" shot. Brothers Walt and Larry Betson of The Scene musician's network did a fabulous job organizing and running the entire affair.  Huge thanks to them and all the great folks at the Scene for inviting us to play.  Speaking of Walt and Larry, their band Brain Damage gave the crowd an incredible two-set Pink Floyd experience (lights, too!) to close the show.  Great weather, great music and great company.  (Special thanks to Greg and his wife Karen for the killer dogs!)  See Photos for more shots of Scenefest.
Saturday, July 16, 2005 John & Peter's Place
Our friend Curtis Eller was forced to cancel his appearance in New Hope after he injured his ankle badly while on stage.  Doing the one-leg thing, probably. (See, we told you his shows were great!)  We're hoping to play with Curtis again soon.  Ray managed to play despite slicing off the tip of a finger on his left hand.  Since these things come in threes, we all drove extra carefully yesterday!  It was a great afternoon to retreat to the cool, dark, friendly confines of John & Peter's and get out of the sweltering July heat and humidity.  Jessica (thanks again!) kept the cold beers flowing and the place was packed.  Thanks to everyone who came, enjoyed the show and bought CDs.
Saturday, June 18, 2005 John & Peter's Place
Thanks to Christine and the John & Peter's staff.  Special thanks to the new fans who purchased our CD.
Friday, June 3, 2005 The Fire
The late spring rain didn't keep the crowd away from this very cool club.  As usual, Dan did a great job with the sound.  Thanks to everyone who braved the elements to come.
Tuesday, May 31, 2005 World Cafe Live
What a great setting for live music!  Special thanks to our friend Hollis Payer who joined us on fiddle for "Jim Beam" and "For What It's Worth".  (Hollis did the fabulous fiddle work on our CD.)  Thanks to Mark, the sound guy, for a fabulous mix in the upstairs room, and to Grace of WCL for inviting us to play.  Curtis Eller was his usual engaging and amazing self, snaring some new Philly fans with his performance.  (Check out our July 16 John & Peter's show - Curtis will be appearing with us again.) Infinien closed out with a very nice jazz-influenced set.  Thanks to all the great friends who came and helped make this night a big success.

John & Peter's Place

What a gas to play at John & Peter's!  A fine winter day in New Hope with lots of friends dropping in to show support.  Greg G. really does have a wife!  Pete MacGregor played a fine opening set, and the Jim Beam flowed freely (who do we thank for that?).  Galactic debut of "The Cause", one of several new tunes being worked into the lineup.  Thanks again to Jessica for keeping the pitcher full and to the rest of the John & Peter's staff for making this such a great venue for us.

Cousin's Irish Pub

Tonight's benefit was organized by Walt Betson and The Scene to raise money for Miguel Malave who is recovering from a very serious motorcycle accident.  With WBZC's Greg G. on hand as MC, the bar was packed and a fabulous time was had by all.  Special thanks to Walt for inviting us to help out and to Shawn and Synergy Productions for the sound.  Thanks also to the folks that bought our CD (proceeds donated to Miguel).  Speaking of Walt, his band, Brain Damage, did an amazing performance of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon (too bad The Wizard of Oz wasn't running on TV!)  Also on the bill:  Mick Guinea and the Krauts (we dug Bertha), Decade, and Handsome Devil.
Saturday, January 15, 2005 Gravel Pike Inn

The Whitpain Tavern

OK, so it didn't turn out to be an actual gig.  We were there and so was the equipment, but the Flyers playoff game caused the cancellation of our set (at least they won!)  In any case, the pay was probably the same.  Our apologies to the friends who came to hear us.  Carl, you're forgiven.
